WELCOME! |
This page will
give you tips
for making WEI correspondence easier and less expensive. |
|
TIP #1: Sending the Introductory Lesson
can be a lot of work. The
task requires opening each lesson, placing your name and address on the
last page, carefully refolding the lesson, taping the edges, adding the
student address and mailing it. The motivation for following this process
is to keep the Air Mail cost down to 60 cents since the taped lessons
weighs in at 0.5 oz.
If you or someone in your church has
computer skills,
here is an alternative that weighs in at 0.6 oz and costs only
63 cents to mail.
(Check latest Postal rates.)
- Compile
the names and addresses in Excel or your favorite spreadsheet or
word processor.
- Mail merge
these to address an envelope
- cost 1/2 cent for the envelope.
- Compose
and print a letter giving the student the teacher's address. You can
also personalize the Introduction with a "Welcome..." message and tell
about WEI's lessons. You can advertise the web site and
communicate other messages of importance too.
- Stuff
the lesson and the letter, seal and get ready for some time savings
at little extra dollar cost.
- Mail the Intros in the
envelopes to
(Please CLICK HERE for a bulk mailing
option.) You will be surprised at how much easier and quicker this is.
And, the cost is only 2 cents more. A real bargain for the time saved.

Tip #2: Sending a "Welcome" Letter:
A "Welcome to WEI" letter
will personalize your teacher/student
relationship, and it is often the relationship that makes the difference
in winning souls. Of course, a welcome letter is part of
Tip #1 and can
communicate the return address
for the student making it easier to prepare lessons for mailing. We
can use some help in making things "faster/better/cheaper" nowadays.
Below is an example welcome letter.

(please print)
Welcome!
You
are about to
enjoy a dynamic course in English
that will help prepare you for the TOEFL test (Test of English as a
Foreign Language). The course consists of three Basic Books and
three Advanced Books in English. There are 7 to 12 lessons in each
book. Reading
assignments will be taken from the Bible,
the world’s best seller and with which much of the English speaking
world is familiar.
Certificates
will be awarded when you complete the Basic Book No. 3 and the
Advanced Book No. 3. The certificate may be helpful in college
applications.
The
complete course begins with an
Introductory Lesson.
This lesson will help the teacher learn about your English skills.
It will give you some idea of the learning process. I think you will
enjoy the lesson too.
Please
write out your
answers to the thought questions
for the test sheets in the Bible reading books. When you complete
all lessons in each Book, please mail the test portion and the
answers to the thought questions to the above address. You do not
need to mail the Books, only
return the test sheets and thought question answers.
The
lessons will be graded and the
next Book will be mailed
to you from your teacher in the USA or another country. You may
preview the contents of each book on the web at www.weiady.org.
We
trust you will
agree to complete the WEI course
in English. We hope you will enjoy the lessons and get to know your
teacher. Your teacher is now your contact to WEI. Feel free to
correspond with your teacher as you wish.
We
apologize for any delay in assigning a teacher to you and we thank
you for your patience. The requests are numerous this year.
You may go as fast as you like. We recommend you
use International Air
Mail for returning your lessons.
Let’s get going!

HELPFUL HINTS
FOR TEACHERS AND COORDINATORS:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We at
Alpha Mailing Solutions, Inc. want to assure
that every piece of mail reaches it's destination in a timely manner and
intact, so we offer the following suggestions that will help you and us in
handling your mailing pieces.
All mail pieces
need to be legibly marked with students name and address, and capitalize
country if possible. All mail being shipped Internationally MUST have a
U.S. return address in the upper left hand corner on every piece, (as
this is to comply with international mailing standards,) and your billing
code number (please contact us if you require a code number.) Do not use
the country of destination address for your return address on the outside of
any piece of mail. To simplify the process, we recommend you have a rubber
stamp made with your US return address for faster handling of your mail
pieces.
All of your mail
is shipped "Airmail", so you do not
need to write "Air Mail" or any other
designation on any piece of your outbound mail. Do not write
"Surface Mail" or
"Par Avion" and please do not affix any other stickers or customs
slips, as they are not needed on your mailing pieces.
Any piece of mail
thicker than one-quarter inch needs
to be secured with clear two-inch tape in both directions, to ensure it's
safe arrival. Do not rely on braded envelopes to remain closed, as they will
not hold. Please seal each envelope with appropriate tape. Scotch tape does
not hold well and we highly recommend the wider two-inch clear tape. Seal
all introductory lessons on both ends and across the middle with appropriate
tape. Do not use staples, as International Postal agencies do not accept
this. Bibles need special strapping, as they tend to tear open the
envelopes very easily so be sure and secure them well in both directions.
Again, We would
like to ensure that your mail arrives at it's destination, therefore any
piece that is not properly prepared will be re-strapped by our workers and a
small fee will be charged for each piece needing special handling or
re-taping.
Once you have prepared your mail for shipping, we recommend that you place
all of your mail in a box or appropriate size package. Print Alpha Mailing
Solutions clearly on the package. Be sure to put your return address and
Code number in the upper left hand corner. We recommend that when sending
your mail to us that you check with the USPS and UPS/FED EX and other s to
find the cheapest means of shipping for the volume that you do. Always
remember that sending one larger box is always cheaper than sending several
small parcels or envelops, thus you save more money. We can also receive UPS
and Fed Ex parcels if you choose to send your mail to us using these
services. However, we want to save you as much money as possible, and this
includes getting your mail to us for processing. If you need any assistance
in this area or more information, please feel free to call us at:

World
Bible School Mailing

Dear World Bible
School Teachers,
In a
constantly changing world, it seems like nothing stays the same for
very long. This is true even in your work with World Bible School.
It seems as if costs are rising on everything these days, and that is
why I am taking this opportunity to write to you. As a fellow WBS
teacher, I know that the cost of mailing lessons to students is an
ever-increasing concern that we all share. It was for this very
reason that we began to research options to see if there was a faster
more reliable way to get mail to our students and still save money in
the process.
We have
found a solution and want to share this information with you so
that you can also take advantage of these great savings on your
mailing needs. We have found a way to consolidate our mail at a very
reasonable price that will still offer a fast and reliable
Air Mail service to the student. For
one low price we can now ship
all of your printed lessons and materials to your students around the
world. No more sorting mail into different categories or sorting by
countries. Simply place all of your mail in one envelope or box and
mail it to us and we will take care of the rest.

you. We offer two rates for shipping Bibles that are cheaper than any
other mailers rates and we can get your Bible to your student in a
timely manner. Compare our rates for the complete Bible and N.T.:
Air Mail

NIV New
Testament $ 5.00 (10 to 14 day Air Mail service)
Simply send
us your mailing labels with the Students name and address clearly
printed on them. Also include a return address label with your US
return address and your code number on it.
Indicate which
type of Bible that you want shipped, (either N.I.V. or K.J.V. or
N.I.V. New Testament) All Bibles are now shipped Air Mail as
that is our only available shipping.
What
other mailing needs do you have?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can also
provide mailing services for other types of shipments that are not
printed matter. However these must be shipped separately from your
printed matter. If you need to ship overseas, we can find a way to do
it for you and save you money.

mailing needs, no matter what the shipment consists of.

Tip #5: Using your PC to collect student
names
How can Missionaries
in the field save teachers tons of work and prevent errors?
Errors cause delays in reaching the student by sending the names and
addresses of new students incorrectly; mail will be returned. Missionaries
can send the addresses in typed format. Think of having to translate
handwritten names from letters of students who request WEI studies. No
errors allowed!
Who better knows these
than a native of the area? Typing
student names will require someone who knows the language and writing
characteristics of the students. A new Christian in the field can be given
the assignment and will feel valued if asked to do this task. Someone in
your congregation who has a
special talent can now find their special ministry.
Marvin Whitt in Cuba City, Philippines has his wife translate the WEI
names and address for him. Josie is a native of the Philippines.
How are the names best
written down? Collecting the
data in a word processor or spreadsheet and e-mailing it to WEI will make
it easy for everyone. Marvin and Josie type the data in Microsoft
Works, a word processor. The file is e-mailed at the speed of light using
the "attach" feature of their e-mail software. When received, the
data are downloaded and the file is read into Excel. The data are
processed into the desired student distribution format - letters, labels,
etc. It's quick, easy, and error free!
How do I format data
in a word processor? Josie
knows that the data management will be done in Microsoft Excel, a
spreadsheet with columns and rows, so she uses the
"comma separated"
feature preferred by the spreadsheet (Any other spreadsheet program
will work the same). Josie knows the column names of the
columns used in the spreadsheet, so she types the data like this...
FORMAT:
FIRSTNAME,LASTNAME,ADDRESS1,ADDRESS2,ADDRESS3,CITY,PROVINCE,
POSTAL CODE, COUNTRY followed by a return or enter to begin a
new line
EXAMPLES:
Grace ,Cena,Mt.
View Village,Inayawan
Pardo,,Cebu
City,Cebu,6014,Philippines
Bonifacio ,Dy
Tan,19
Sikatuna St,Happy
Vally Rd,Apt.
1,Cebu
City,Cebu,6000,Philippines
Brunilda ,Shingjergji,Lagja.E
Re Pall.23/1,Rr:Kraste
No.10,Apt.H.B./8,Fier,Albania,Europe
Notice the following details:
The
format is obeyed.
For example, the first name and last name are separated by a comma as are
all other entries.
There are
no spaces
between the commas which makes the eventual printing onto envelopes and
labels align uniformly.
In the first address, i.e., Grace..., there is
not an "ADDRRESS3", but
there is a comma as a place-holder for
that entry. This places the data in the correct columns of the spreadsheet
when there is no third address.
In the last example of Albania, notice the
address that is completely unfamiliar to teachers in English speaking
nations.
Also, notice that another datum is added,
i.e. Europe.
The continent is required when mailing to Albania. The format needs
to match the address requirements.
How does the
spreadsheet work? Once the
file has been e-mailed and is on the hard drive, it is opened in Excel.
In Excel, the "comma separated" selection is made and the data
automatically go into columns with each address going into a row.
Transferring any number of addresses is done in a split second!
Marvin's files have been from 4 to over 100 students in a single mailing.
How are the names
processed for teachers to use?
Mail Merge them.
In Microsoft software, open Word, the word processor. From the tool
bar, select "tools", then "mail merge." Go from there. The "source"
will be the spreadsheet and the output can be any label, envelope, or
custom page. The "Mail Merge" feature is a standard feature in most word
processors.
Instead of using a spreadsheet, the same can be
accomplished by opening the e-mailed data into a word processor. Data in
comma separated format can be mail merged from a word processor too. Any
other format is fine as long as the PC users agree on the preferred
procedure.
What other advantages
are there to using a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet is designed for data management.
Data in columns and rows can be
sorted, filtered, and
counted. Many other functions can be
used.
One useful spreadsheet function is the
"find"
feature. To quickly look up a name, address or a teacher is very useful.
Sorting
is arranging the data alphabetically. For example the data can be sorted
by city or zip resulting in grouping by city or zip.
Additional columns can be used for recording
the names and addresses of teachers when assigned. This gives the ability
to make labels with return addresses for mailing.
Filtering
means that only those rows having a selected name will be listed. This
gives power to making tables of students assigned to teachers where the
assignments are made randomly. A list of student names from Romania given
to Carolyn in Southwest congregation in Little Rock can quickly be made
and printed. Statistics of WEI activities worldwide can be published
for planning purposes.
Why Bother?
If we are to reach WEI's goal of 1
million students in the year 2004, we have to be efficient. We need
to be teaching students instead of processing envelopes and mail. The best
tool presently available is a PC. E-mail is a true blessing when
working with students from abroad - immediate transfer of names and no
expensive stamps.
How to get started?
Most of us know someone who is PC literate. Engaging them in this
ministry will be like adding a half dozen people to your staff. For
translation of those difficult envelope addresses, most likely there is
someone in the field who can be engaged. Leaders were placed in the
church "to prepare God's people for works of service..." Eph. 4:12 as we
"Go into all the world..." Mark 16:15.

Tip #9: Personalize
and Keep Track. One of the things that needs to be
considered by the teacher is keeping track of your past correspondence. I
put my past letters into the computer with the address which I just repeat
on the next copy. Their letters go in a notebook, even though I don't save
all the lessons, just the letters and written "Thought Questions" from the
Bible section. On the first lesson, I include
a picture of myself, perhaps with Lyn or a grandchild. I request a picture
of them, which I put above my computer. The more personable
I am the more interest is seemingly generated.
I also find that some information about the country (Oregon) or other
non-lesson points of contact help. I avoid anything that tells of the
affluent lifestyle that we have here.

Tip
#10: Preparation
to Teach In terms of "How to Teach using WEI," I
would encourage people to get involved with
the correspondence course first, if possible. It will
introduce them to the lessons on less than a crash basis such as we went
through on our first time to teach in Elbasan in 1998. I don't know how you
would cover such or prepare for such, but our greatest struggle was with
some students doing three + lessons per time while others were doing one.
That meant we had to prepare for each student independently while learning
what was in each lesson at the same time. I have mentioned the problems
without mentioning the good things about this series. The series is very
good for students who come with little knowledge of God's word and that is
of course the very audience in Albania.

#11: Your own business cards invites students.
If you have a
PC with a word processor or better still Publisher software, you can
readily make your own business cards. Put a few in your pocked, purse,
daytimer, billfold or even in your Bible so you can readily find them.
Put WEI's web URL on the
card - www.weiady.org. Now, your new contact can send you their
address for your follow up. Ask them to e-mail to you so you will
have their e-mail address too.
Important contacts other
than potential students may bring to you a teacher or a campaigner.
Maybe you can bring someone to make a financial contribution to WEI's
campaigns just by giving them your address and phone number.
Whatever you do, make
it your business to be proactive in spreading the good-news of Jesus and
his kingdom. Advertise.

Jan’s story
"Several months ago a student asked me if I had any Bible lessons in
Russian for my friends who don't know English. After inquiring here and
there and not finding anything I really wanted, I decided WEI Bible books
were exactly what was needed. I asked Dick if such a translation had
been done. When Dick said, "No," and gave his permission, I wrote our
interpreter from our 1993 trip to Ukraine. She's Russian born, an English
teacher, and one of the first converts in Ternopil, a city of about
250,000 in Western Ukraine. In other words, I trust her linguistic ability
AND that she would be faithful to the text.
"Some months went by and then I received an
e-mail from her daughter, using someone else's computer, that she had
completed the translation of the first book, that mom had proofread it,
and she was working on the second WEI book. I asked her to send me a copy
and that's when I put notice on the TEEM list and got my first request for
a copy.
"The request is from one of Jan’s e-mail
students, a young leader in a charismatic church. His English is so poor
that it will be good for him to go through the lessons again in Russian."

"There is no reward like that
found in teaching!"
This is especially true when I got the following letter from a 64 yr. old
Albanian who speaks 5 languages and says he has never heard of God or the
Bible as taught in the WEI lessons. His background is having grown up from a

The quantity of consonants in the English language is constant. If
omitted in one place, they turn up in another. When a Bostonian "pahks" his

Tip 23: How to Teach WEI
face-to-face
Teaching WEI
lessons face-to-face involves meeting 1 hour each day with each student.
At times 2 or 3 will want to study together. This may be necessary if one
is not very good in English. WEI lessons are made to be read ahead of time
which means that if a student cannot do this he/she will need help.
Here is an example: In the first year, I taught one student with her
younger sister. I taught her sister how to say "Hello, how are you?" and
not much else. Her sister taught her at home. The second year, the younger
of the two spoke English fairly well. I baptized both of them. Without my
awareness, they taught their younger sister who spoke no English. She was
baptized first. The mother watched and was extremely pleased.
The way to
select students who are able to read and do the homework
is to give each one the Introductory lesson, ask them to complete it, and
come in for an interview. If they have done well in their reading, then
take them as a student. If not, then they can be matched with an
interpreter or put into a Beginner's English class (held later and taught
by one of their language).
Each lesson is
to be read and the quiz is to be done in both the English and Bible each
day. They are to write out their answers to the thought questions.
The hour
session begins with grading their English quiz.
Ask if there are any questions. Make suggestions regarding learning
vocabulary, help them with pronunciations (They should be given Tape 1.)
and any grammar if they need help. Don't spend a lot of time with English.
Second, grade
their Bible quiz.
The thought questions will give a good starting place. After a brief
discussion of the thought questions,
show them your own
answers and lead them into an open Bible discussion keeping it simple and
on the subject of the lesson. This is important. The lessons will teach
themselves and are progressive.
Time wise:
5 min "How was your day?"
5-7 min English "Any questions?" (may take 20 min)
25 min "Let's work through your Bible lesson."
15 min "What do you want to talk about today?" or "I have some scriptures
for you today."
Some ideas
for the scripture enhancements:
1. In the ETR Bible, have them read the Introductory pages
and mark up anything interesting with their highlighter. This can be an
assignment or an activity during the hour. It gives a great summary of the
Bible narrative.
2. Walk them through the Bible. Many have never seen a
Bible. I use the theme "Someone is coming; Someone has come; Someone is
coming again" to teach divisions of the Bible and the message. Take
this from Genesis 3:15. Then, as you study show them the "types" and
"shadows" of the "Someone." For example, Jacob's ladder is a type of
Jesus. Jesus is the ladder. John 1:51. The angels going up and down the
ladder are the offices of Jesus -- priest (up: man to God) and prophet
(down: God to man.)
3. Have them look up scriptures, using the Index.
4. Find, mark and memorize key verses.
5. Teach them simple songs. If you have several students
at once (I like 2 to 5 students who know each other), they likely will
love to sing. This may not be useful until about the 3rd week after they
feel comfortable being in a school environment where they perhaps have
been to a group singing. A good song is "Heaven is a Wonderful Place. Full
of glory and grace. I want to see my Savior's face. Heaven is a wonderful
place. (Repeat)"
On the "What do
you want to talk about approach:
Teach people instead
of material.
Take them from where they are to where you want them.
I will not forget the 3 girls that I studied with for 3 hours on day one.
We talked about boys and choosing husbands. All three were baptized after
completing the Advanced course.
An older gentleman enjoyed my showing him the meaning of key verses using
Greek words studies.
An eager Orthodox needed a walk through church history.
A Catholic was baptized only after she saw the history of the Roman
Catholic church.
An Atheist wanted to learn English, so I taught him English and
Christianity as a system for governments -- as he led me into a discussion
of Communism, Capitalism, etc.
For your information:
On the web are some answers to the thought questions.
Some are extensive and are for teachers. Some are incomplete. When they
ask about evolution, there are some ideas for you on the web.
You can find these at the home page www.weiady.org, and click on
"Lesson Enrichments." Or
copy this URL into your web browser:
"http://www.weiady.org/tips/scriptures_for_Book_1.htm. In eMail, you
can copy/paste/edit them as part of your Teacher's Comments.
Giving each
student an ETR Bible
is highly recommended once they have shown that they are a serious
student. The WEI lessons reference this version. All other English
versions are too hard for their English skills, especially the KJV and ASV
with the Thee and Thou English. Don't give them these for the study. They
will not learn much.
Give them a yellow highlighter
and show them how to use it.
Sequence of
Thoughts
Walk them through this though sequence as you go through the lessons:
1. We are created by God in his image -- able to think and free to choose;
we will choose. There are only 2 choices: God and Satan. You will choose
one or the other. You cannot not choose.
2. God hates sin. We all sin. Before the earth was formed, God had a plan
to restore the relation we have with him because he knows that Satan was free on
the earth.
3. Having a relationship with God is based on trust, beyond believing.
4. Someone is coming. He is Jesus.
5. There is only one decision needing to be made:
Did Jesus come out of
the grave? If
"no," then we are learning History. If "yes," then we need to revisit
trust and be sure of the consequences of our decision.
6. Tell me about your sins. This is a question in Book 3.
7. Here is how you get yourself right with God. The ETR Bible in 1 Peter
3:21 has "We are asking God to forgive us when we are in the water" --
paraphrased.
Each teacher has their own skill set. I like to use a pencil, pad and my
own sketches as I make key points. With one who is still learning English,
writing down key words and making simple diagrams gives them a visual
easier to understand and one that I can reference again and again. I
highly recommend each teacher have these tools and learn to use them.
Toward the end of the 3rd book, the student needs to be marking up their
Bible text where they have questions. After baptism and near completion or
after completion of the last lesson in Book 6, give them an assignment to
read and mark anything interesting in key NT books. I saw several students
read and mark all of John in one evening; they marked all of Ehp., Phil.,
Col, Thess., overnight; we took 2 hrs to mark up James together; overnight
two worked through Acts filling in a table of what was done in each
recorded conversion story. Their enthusiasm ran wild. Then, they wanted to
sing and learn songs.

WORLD BIBLE SCHOOL MAIL SYSTEM
(In-Countrv Mail Box Addresses for 9 African Countries)
WEI lessons are welcomed in the WBS mailing system.
The World Bible School Mail System is for in-coming
mail from targeted nations only. This system has been put in
place to assure a reliable way for students to get their mail back to their
study helper in a timely manner that keeps them studying and interested. We
only provide this service for the countries listed below. All mail is
handled by WBS workers and so there are no other people handling the mail or
causing any other delays.
If you choose to use this service, you simply show
the address below for your students return address in-country.
The mail is collected and posted to Cedar Park, TX for sorting and shipping
on to the teacher. You must use your WBS Code # on
all mail, (especially the answer sheets) or it cannot be returned
to you as the Code is the only way we
have of knowing whose mail it is. If you do not have a
WBS Code # for your congregation, you can call and we will
assign one for use by WBS teachers in your congregation. The Code # is free
of charge and is assigned by state as shown: (TX-001). Please put the proper
address on all mail and use your CODE in all
Teacher boxes (Red Boxes on all lessons) in the appropriate
places and in the small box on the bottom of each answer page.
U.S. Postal Regulations require a U.S.A. return
address on the outside of the envelope of anything that IS mailed
to a foreign country. Please always put Your USA
Return Address on the OUTSIDE (upper left-hand comer) of each
envelope mailed to your student, and NOT the in-country address
below.

Tip # 28: How to use your ETR Bible
Dear Student,
Let me tell you about your Bible.
The Bible has two major parts. They are the Old Testament and the New
Testament. The OT was originally written in Hebrew. The NT was originally
written in Greek. Jesus spoke Aramaic, the language of Israel in AD 30. The
Bible has been translated into many languages, literally hundreds of
languages. It is the oldest book in the world. It is the world's best
seller. Every year, more people buy the Bible than any other book in the
world.
Your Bible has been translated from the original languages by using only 500
words. This is to make it easy for you to read. This is why it is called the
Easy-to-Read English Version of the Bible. There are many English versions
as a result of continuing language research. As changes in the English
language occur newer translations are issued.
Do you know that you can buy a Bible in almost any language?
The word "Bible" means "book of books." In the OT, there are 39 books; in
the NT, there are 27 books. This makes a total of 66 books in the entire
Bible. You can find a list of the names in the first pages of your ETR
Bible.
One way to learn the names of the books is to make groups of them. The OT
has 5 groups. The groups have the number of books like this: 5, 12, 5, 5, 12
just like the fingers on your hand. The first group is called the
"Pentateuch" because there are 5 books in it. We are familiar with the
meaning of "penta" from Intel's Pentium, the 5th computer processor that
they made.
Here are the groups of the OT:
5 books of law tell the story from Creation to the nation of Israel.
12 books of history tell the history of Israel.
5 books of poetry and proverbs.
5 books of major prophets are major because they are long.
12 books of minor prophets are minor because they are only a few pages.
WEI's books 1 and 2 are stories from the Pentateuch.
In the Garden of Eden, God told Eve that "Someone" would come and crush
Satan's head. That "Someone" is Jesus. When Jesus came, Satan was angry. He
had Jesus killed. Jesus died. He was buried. After 3 days, God raised him
from the dead. Jesus came out of the grave. He was alive again! He walked;
he talked; he ate; he was human; he was alive again! Amazing! Satan could
not keep him in the grave. Satan's head (the seat of authority) was crushed. He lost his power
forever.
Before Jesus came, the story about him is in the Old Testament (OT). After Jesus was
born, the story is in the New Testament (NT). You will find that the OT has
many more pages than the NT. The story of Eve and the promise of "Someone"
who would come is in the OT; the story of Jesus being raised from the dead
is in the NT. Jesus is the "Someone."
The idea of a "Testament" is the same as that of an agreement. The OT is the
agreement of God with his people before Jesus. God made an agreement with
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Then, when Jesus came, the Old Agreement was
finished, and a New Agreement or New Testament was given by God. We live
under the New Agreement or NT.
Now, you can look at the NT.
There are 27 books in the NT. They can be remembered by the number of books
in each of 5 groups -- 4, 1, 14, 7, 1.
4 books tell the story of Jesus and are called the "good news" or gospels.
1 book tells about the followers of Jesus and the establishment of his
church.
14 books are called Pauline Letters because they were written by Paul.
7 books are called General Letters and are written by Peter, James, John,
and Jude.
1 book is called Revelation. It was written to Christians who were being
persecuted.
WEI's books 1 and 2 are taken from the OT -- creation to Isaiah. WEI's book
3, "The King has Come," is taken from the gospels plus the book called
"Acts." The lessons in WEI's Advanced books are taken from all of the NT
books. They tell of God's plan for forgiving your sins. They tell about
God's people today.
The Bible is often called the "Scriptures." Each book of the Bible or
Scriptures is divided into chapters. Each chapter is divided into verses.
This is so that we can find "references" or "passages" in the books as they
are called. We can easily find the "passage" again by using the book, the
chapter, and the verse. If I tell you to find John 3:16, you can find the
page number in the index for John, then you can find the chapter and the
verse. Try it.
You will find in the front of your ETR Bible a few pages that tell the story
of the entire Bible. In your Bible, it is called the "Preface." I suggest
that you read this story.
The Bible was written by about 40 men over a period of about 1,600 years.
The stories cover a period much longer that that. The writers did not know
each other. But, there is only one story -- Jesus is coming, Jesus has come,
and Jesus is coming again. The Bible says that the words were "God breathed"
which means that he gave the words to the writers. It is God's Word. In it
are no contradictions. There is only one story and it can be believed. God
wrote it.
You can believe the Bible because it is true. How do we know that it is
true? Here are some reasons:
1. No other book has ever been written by 40 men over 1,600 years without
contradictions within it. Only God could do this.
2. It claims that God wrote it. We would expect this.
3. The message makes sense. It tells us what every philosopher wishes to
know.
4. There are many prophecies in the OT. All of these came true. How could
that be?
5. Science continually proves the Bible to be true. For example, the Bible
told us that the earth is suspended in space before science discovered it to
be true. How did the writer know this fact? (Job 26:7).
6. There was a man who died, was buried, and he came out of the grave to
walk the earth again. Men from Galilee witnessed his ascension into Heaven.
He believed the Bible to be true. It is a story about him. His name is
Jesus. He is our King!
The reason the Bible was written was to tell you about God, where you came
from, who you are, where you are going, and that God loves you dearly. It
tells us how to be saved from our sins and be right with God so we can eat
of the Tree of Live and live forever. It is a book of Peace, Joy, and hope.
When I read an important book, I mark special words and places so that I can
easily find them again. I suggest you mark your Bible in this way. Use a
pencil or a pen that does not come through the paper. Be neat and careful.
When your Bible is old and torn, you can have another one.
Read your Bible everyday and think about it every night. When you follow
Jesus, you will be happy on the earth and you will be ready when he comes
again to take you to heaven with him.
May God bless you,
Bob Patterson

Tip #
30: On
Teaching
by Dr. Bill Patterson
Jesus was recognized as a Teacher from God (John 3:2). He is
our Master Teacher and He expects His followers, by reason of growth, to
become teachers. (Hebrews 5:12). Our Great Commission is to make
disciples/learners (Matthew 28:18-20) and this calls for teachers.
A serious mistranslation in most English Bibles is James 3:1,
"Let not many of you become teachers." The original (Greek) actually says,
"Let not many of you continue to teach," action in progress is to be stopped
for many were stumbling not knowing what they were teaching; they would
receive "heavier judgment" (see also 1 Timothy 1:7). Their tongues or
teaching would get them and others, like ships, in troubled waters.
It is important not only to know how to teach but also what.
Jesus was the Master Teacher because of at least three
things: 1) He Himself was the subject — "Come learn of Me;" 2) He understood
the learner — "He Himself knew what was in man" (John 2:25); and, 3) He knew
and used all of the methods of teaching, especially those that would make
learners think — questions, stories, discussions, visual aids, even argument
or debate.
With all of this said, what makes a growing Christian a
growing Christian teacher? First, he must know the subject, the truth,
doctrine which is "all that I commanded you" (Matthew 28:20).
Understandably, this takes Bible study: much regular serious study.
Likewise, the effective teacher will know his/her students.
We teach learners not lessons. This takes establishing a warm friendly and
loving relationship. In a real sense a teacher is a mentor, a friend and
wise counselor, a trainer.
Since we teach learners, we need to know something about how
learners learn: the process, the dynamic, of learning. Putting together all
these three areas of which Jesus was Master, we will do well to recognize
the three domains of learning: head, heart, hand. Or, as educators put it:
cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Too, we will do well to realize that
there are two stages or levels of learning in each of these domains. In the
head-cognitive it is Acquaintance and Understanding: awareness and objective
reasoning by which we grasp eternal and essential truths.
In the heart-affective domain it is Insight and Decision: our
feelings along with subjective activity such as attitudes, values, beliefs,
commitment. The hand-psychomotor domain is the Living and Empowered levels:
doing-action-experiencing and joyful strengthening (to keep on
learning/growing).
When the growing Christian learns to work with these dynamics
of teaching-learning (the two go together), he will see that this is the
basis of getting to know God. First, we learn about God's will (Colossians
1:9). Then, as we progress through the levels up to and into Living, we are
"increasing in the knowledge of God (v. 10). In this level we come to know
God experientially for we experience "God who is at work in you both to will
and to work" (Philippians 2:13).
Unquestionably, becoming a Christian is an awesome
experience. Then becoming a growing Christian is a perpetual challenge to
grow in our Christian life.

31:
Ideal Teacher
Dear Teachers,
Who was your best teacher ever? Is there such a thing as the Ideal Teacher?
I'm convinced there is no single Ideal Teacher, because students' needs
differ at every age and stage. There might be three ideal types, though. The
great elementary school teacher, the great middle school and high school
teacher, and the great college professor.
What makes them great?
I've been asking that question a lot lately, trying to understand what makes
a teacher great. I've talked to all kinds of people, from little kids to
busy adults to teachers of teachers. From their answers I was able to
distill a list of traits:
Great teachers ...
* make you feel special.
* teach you how to learn.
* inspire you with their passion.
* engage your whole being.
* keep you focused.
* open you up to new experiences.
* have no agenda.
* make the complicated simple.
* give clear explanations.
* show you how everything ties together.
Can all these traits be found in one teacher?
And you know what? Now
that I think about it, maybe there is one trait that separates great
teachers from those who are merely good: this ability to open doors and
give you the power to walk into new worlds on your own. That's what I'd
say, anyway. What would you say?

33: Audio on-line
Please note that there are two links
here to offer to your students. Each has a benefit and each has a liability.
You, the teacher, should exercise discretion in sending information to your
student for them to listen to these recorded messages. Please, review the
benefits and liabilities before you send this information to any student.
1. WEI Tapes: www.weiady.org/tapes/taudio.htm
listen.
The
two WEI's tapes are now online for listening on
the web.
Tape No. 1
pronounces each of the new vocabulary words
found in each English lessons.
Please, note that side 2 of Tape 1 is a reading from the New Testament.
Tape No. 2
contains the listening test of the Advanced
English book No. 1 "Listening Comprehension." This tape is necessary for a
student wanting to prepare for the TOEFL exam. These audio tapes are
online and are available to all new students on the web who are evaluating
this course. There is a link from the Welcome page for all to click.
-
Benefits -- these are
extremely valuable for a student who lives in a non-English speaking
country.
-
Liabilities-- students who
are in a public place may find it impossible and maybe disallowed to
listen to any sounds in their Internet Cafe or work place. Most computers
have a speaker within; however, very few have a headset for private
listening. Internet Cafes are silent. Note that in some countries the
student might be put at personal risk should they be listening to or
viewing American produced web material. Use
caution as you advise your student.
2. WEIAudio:
www.weiady.org/audio.htm Click here to
listen.
The
second audio link makes possible for one to
listen to every Bible lesson in the Basic 3 books. This is a great
feature now possible because of Bob Towell's
(bobtowell@aol.com) effort.
The student simply clicks on each lesson and then on the paragraph to
which he wishes to listen. He/she can listen to it again and again. Give
your student this address.
3.
WEIAudio CD: Order your copy
of WEIAudio CD.
to order by email.
This is a CD with the same
audio links, but on a CD for distribution. You are encouraged to
distribute copies FREE to your students. Only the Basic Bible lessons are
available on this CD. The Advanced lessons, New Birth, New Life, and The
Church will be available later. Write Bob Towell to order your CD, please.
Try it and give Bob Towell some feedback. (If you find errors, please
report them to him. Thanks!)
